have seen the "you really bought a tesla?" post a couple times now and it's another one of those things that I think people often have misconceptions about

1. the cheapest Tesla (model 3) was the world's bestselling electric car from 2018 to 2020, when it was ousted by the 2nd-cheapest Tesla (model Y). the model Y was the single best selling car in the world in the first quarter of 2023. they are very popular.

2. the cheapest Tesla is $40,240 new. with the $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicles, a price tag of $32,740 puts it on par with the Honda Odyssey minivan's base price or with slightly nicer trims of SUVs like the Subaru Outback or Toyota RAV4, and only about $100 more than a new Prius Prime. People in California may also qualify for an additional $2000-$5000 rebate for buying one, bringing the price down to $27,740 - just $1000 more than a new Toyota Camry.

3. the concerns about safety are often weighted against an incorrect baseline - so far, current data show that electric vehicles aren't more likely to catch fire in an accident than gas vehicles and are actually less likely to do so (but this is difficult to get solid data on. there's a bunch of articles reporting on a study by an insurance company showing a massive reduction in fire risk but the underlying data are highly suspicious).

4. the big point of distrust that I think is grounded: recalls. some of the 22 (22!) model 3 recalls are ~trivial, like "the driver's side sun visor may be missing the airbag warning sticker", but some are more serious, like "the airbags might not be correctly connected to the car." it seems like a lot of the issues have been addressed on the current (2023-2027) line, but the recurring problems with things ranging from minor software issues to pretty serious function issues are good cause for concern. None of the ones I've read about seem as severe as Toyota's "oops the accelerator gets stuck and your car can't stop moving forward" recall or Ford's "oops the engine explodes" recalls [plural], and even the worst ones are on par with things we've seen before especially from US automakers (glaring at Ford, GM, and Ford again). Ford and GM are both guilty of continuing to use known bad parts for >5 years with (in one case) thousands of fires and (in another) over a hundred deaths. moreover, GM's Bolt EV is under a 100% recall for the 2017-2022 model years for high fire risk and Ford recalled over 100,000 hybrids for fire risk - so is Tesla worse than GM or Ford? I don't know if I'd say that, but I'd really want a car I buy to live up to a higher standard.

in short, the most popular teslas by a huge margin are the two most affordable ones, which are fairly accessible to consumers (especially in California). the risk of a tesla exploding or catching on fire is not, as far as I can tell, higher than other cars (and it appears to be less likely per million miles traveled than some other EVs on the market). teslas still have a bunch of quality issues, and they still have some stupid design choices - but you can easily buy a shittier car for a lot more money, particularly an American-made one.

Front seat occupants will appreciate the infotainment system’s intuitive ease of use, as well as optional heated and cooled seats. The reconfigurable seats in the second and third row can be quickly folded away, opening up to 142 cubic feet of cargo space. With looks and features like these, the Sedona isn’t just for busy parents—it’s a crossover alternative for any driver seeking a combo of space and style.

2020 Toyota Sienna

This generation of Toyota Sienna has been sold since 2010. Back then, it was a comparison test winner, but today it feels its age despite a recent refresh. Still, some features keep it a compelling option among 8-passenger vans. It’s pretty powerful; its 3.5-liter V-6 makes a tire-spinning 296 hp and 263 lb-ft of torque. The Sienna is also the only 2020 minivan available with all-wheel drive, and good braking performance improves confidence. Interior volume is ample; most adults will fit comfortably in any row. Large windows add to the impression of space, which, with the available dual moonroof setup, helps passengers not feel squeezed in. Its impressive drivetrain and capacity keep the Sienna an 8-passenger van worth consideration, but technology upgrades—smartphone integration, full-speed adaptive cruise control, and a larger infotainment screen—would make it more competitive.

2020 Honda Odyssey

Honda knows things can get rowdy in a van full of kids, so it’s packed the Odyssey with features to help everyone aboard stay sane and safe. Drivers can keep an eye on back-seat shenanigans with the interior camera, and project their voice through the rear speakers or connected wireless headphones. There’s an optional 10.2-inch rear-seat display for watching movies, plus an app that shows the trip ahead to answer the question “are we there yet?” A stroke of van genius was realized in the built-in vacuum cleaner, perfect for sucking up spilled snacks. The Odyssey’s 3.5-liter V-6 and 10-speed automatic transmission provide solid performance and fuel economy, and ride quality melds stability and agility. Reconfigurable middle-row seats allow for a 7-seat setup with captain’s chairs, or a bench that lets 8 people ride along. However, they don’t easily fold away for loading cargo. Those and somewhat busy styling aside, the 2020 Honda Odyssey is a great 8-passenger minivan.

2020 Chrysler Pacifica

We extolled the virtues of vanning over the year we spent with the Chrysler Pacifica. The available stowable middle-row seats are a boon to practicality, helping to open up 140.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The Pacifica is comfortable and easy to get in and out of thanks to the wide-opening sliding rear doors. It features Chrysler’s slick and responsive Uconnect infotainment system, and 8 USB ports to keep everyone’s devices juiced up. Though it’s no sport sedan substitute, the Pacifica has enjoyably car-like handling, with confident cornering and a well-controlled chassis. What’s more, for 2020 it’s the only plug-in hybrid minivan, allowing up to 33 miles of all-electric driving or 566 miles between gasoline refills. Among vans that can hold 8 passengers, the Pacifica brims with near-luxury appointments. It’s a nice vehicle no matter what it’s compared to.

Supercars are supposed to miss the forest for the trees. These ragged-edge cars focus so intently on high-speed performance and high-cost trimmings that they’re often tough to truly utilize on a daily basis, relegating them to weekend warriors at best. But not the 2020 Acura NSX. This Japanese scalpel is more than ready to rumble on a backroad, but it carries a softness that gives the car more than enough pliancy to make for a quality grocery-getter, albeit one that’s a bit over equipped for the task.

Before I even get behind the wheel of the 2020 Acura NSX, I’m hit with that familiar kind of supercar weird-for-the-sake-of-being-weird-ness. On approach, the thin door handles pop out to greet me, which is a fun parlor trick. Thankfully, the doors open in the normal direction, as the NSX has absolutely no problem turning heads without bringing atypical hinges and butterfly doors into the equation.

With interesting angles in every direction, from flying buttresses out back to the aggressive front bumper, the NSX is like most other supercars in that it’s damn near impossible to blend in anywhere. Even beyond the show-off styling, my tester’s $6,000 Valencia Red Pearl paint job isn’t about to let that happen.

First impressions come quickly after sliding past the NSX’s door. Despite the body’s relative position to terra firma, the seating position is a little higher than I expect, giving me a greater feeling of normalcy than I encounter in, say, a McLaren or a Lamborghini. Visibility is quite good in most directions, with loads of forward sight (thanks in part to way-thin A-pillars) and superb blind-spot coverage from the mirrors that sprout from the body like antennae. The view out back is fine, considering there’s an engine a few inches behind me. Be mindful of the sun’s position, though: Too many direct rays from ol’ Sol and the front windshield begins to resemble a cheese grater thanks to serious reflections of the massive speaker grille below. It can be really annoying, especially in spirited driving or slow-speed neighborhoods where children and squirrels are likely to be in the street.

Overall, the NSX’s interior quality feels worth the $150,000+ cost of admission. Soft leather covers most of the dashboard, door panels, center tunnel and steering wheel, and what isn’t made from the smooth stuff is bedecked in carbon fiber (a $2,500 option) and satin aluminum. The small bit of piano black trim on the transmission controls, which should be very familiar to most recent Honda or Acura owners, is the only part of the interior that feels a little low-rent, and only then it’s because of its propensity to accumulate finger grime. The cup holders are small and only attach to a slot on the center console, but you can tuck them into the diminutive glove compartment when not in use. Other storage comes by way of wallet-sized slots in the door panels, a key- (and mask-) sized slot in the center console and a small hinged cubby against the rear firewall that houses the USB port. It’s tight, like many supercars, but there’s still a decent amount of room for my 6-foot frame to get comfortable.

Most mid-engined supercars throw owners a storage bone by way of front and rear trunks. But not the NSX — electric motors and other hardware live under the hood, so the only cargo storage is located aft of the engine. Not only is the trunk small, its proximity to the twin-turbo V6 means whatever goes back there has to be heat-tolerant. Put your bags of ice in the passenger-side footwell.

All of those silly concerns melt away from the second I push the start button. Just behind my head, the 3.5-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 growls itself awake before quickly settling into a quieter idle, something neighbors are bound to appreciate. A push of the Drive button puts the nine-speed dual-clutch transmission to work, which provides just a smidgeon of slip as first gear engages.

In the default Sport mode, the NSX proves to me that it can absolutely function as a daily driver. Despite lacking air or McLaren’s complicated hydraulics, the NSX’s static suspension is surprisingly comfortable, soaking up a wide variety of bumps and humps without unsettling the car or its occupants. The chassis’ inherent stiffness remains obvious, but the ride is far smoother than I went in expecting.

Small issues with the cabin disappear completely once the speedometer starts to rise.

Gear shifts are unobtrusive, and in low-rev situations, the V6 (which produces 500 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque on its own) is content to putter along quietly — if it’s even running at all. In Quiet mode, the NSX will use its small battery to operate like any other hybrid, silently hustling along under electric power alone — Sport offers electric-only operation, too, but in more limited quantities.
